Free tier arithmetic, checked August 2026
Free text to video AI, measured properly
Six of the eight free plans checked here do not publish enough numbers to work out what you get, and the two that do come to roughly 270 and 600 seconds a month. If a page tells you it is free without telling you how many seconds, it has not told you anything.
The problem with comparing free plans is that no two of them are quoted in the same unit. One counts generations a day. One counts credits with no published rate. One counts minutes of avatar video, which is a different product wearing the same word. So this page converts everything into one number, and where the conversion is impossible it says so instead of estimating.
The unit
Clean seconds a month
Seconds of finished video, without a watermark, that you can download and use, in a calendar month, having paid nothing and given no card details.
Everything that fails one of those conditions comes out as zero or as not computable. A watermarked second is not a clean second. A trial is not a month.
The arithmetic, shown
There are only two sums involved and both are worth seeing, because the second one is where every comparison in this category quietly gives up.
- Daily runs. Generations a day, times seconds per generation, times thirty. Three runs a day at three seconds is nine seconds a day, so about 270 seconds a month.
- Credits. Credits granted, divided by credits per second, times the model multiplier. This one cannot be done at all unless the page publishes the rate, and almost none of them do. That is not an oversight on their part.
Every free plan in one table
| Tool | How it is quoted | Clean seconds a month | Watermark free |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Hour | 3 generations a day, 3 seconds each, audio included | About 270 seconds a month | Yes on the free generations the page describes |
| Synthesia | 10 minutes a month, avatar video | 600 seconds a month, but avatar output rather than generated footage | Not stated for the free plan |
| Adobe Firefly | A daily allotment of credits | Not computable, the credit amount is not on the page | Yes |
| Pixlr | Credit based free tier | Not computable, no credit amount and no rate published | Yes, stated on the page |
| Kapwing | Free plan, credit metered | Not computable | No, the free plan watermarks |
| GizAI | Free generations before an account | Not computable, the count is not published | Yes |
| Vidnoz | Free daily generations with HD download | Not computable, the daily count is not published | Yes on the download promised |
| Vidu | Free trial | Not computable, a trial is not a monthly allowance | Not stated |
What 270 seconds a month is actually worth
It sounds like more than it is. Generated clips do not land first time, so the number you care about is usable seconds, not generated seconds. On the easy subjects, roughly one take in three is worth keeping. On faces and fast motion it is worse than one in five.
| Allowance | At 1 usable take in 3 | What that finishes |
|---|---|---|
| 270 seconds a month | About 90 usable seconds | One short social video, or prompt testing for a bigger project |
| 600 seconds a month | About 200 usable seconds | Three or four short vertical videos, if the subjects are easy ones |
| Nine seconds a day | About three usable seconds a day | One shot. Useful for deciding whether a prompt is worth paying to run. |
That is the honest use for a free tier. It is a testing budget. You find the prompt and the model that work, then you pay to run the shots you actually need.
The limits that are not counted in seconds
- Model choice. Free tiers usually restrict which models you can pick. The native audio models are the ones held back most often.
- Resolution. 720p free, 1080p paid, is the common split. Some tools upscale rather than generate higher, which is not the same thing.
- Queue priority. Free runs go to the back. On a busy day the wait is the real limit rather than the count.
- Commercial use. Several free tiers grant personal use only. Read the terms before a client sees the output.
- Retention. Free outputs are sometimes deleted after a set number of days. Download everything the day you make it.
Where to go from here
If your question is really about accounts and watermarks rather than monthly allowances, the testing and the dated results are on the no sign up page. For what these models can and cannot do at any price, the overview is the video AI generator page.
Why credits are quoted instead of seconds
Almost every tool in this market bills in a unit it invented. That is not only obfuscation, there is a real reason for it: the cost of a generation varies by model and by resolution, so one number of seconds does not map to one cost. A credit absorbs that variation.
The problem is that a credit only means something if the exchange rate is published, and it usually is not. When a page says one hundred free credits without saying how many credits a second costs, it has given you a number that cannot be converted into anything.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Model | The largest factor. A native audio model costs several times a silent one. |
| Resolution | 1080p typically costs meaningfully more than 720p for the same length. |
| Length | Linear. Ten seconds costs twice five seconds. |
| Audio | Charged either as part of the model or as a separate pass, depending on the tool. |
| Failed takes | Charged in full. This is the factor nobody prices in when they plan. |
The last row is the one to remember. Cost per usable second is roughly cost per second multiplied by the number of takes you need, which on easy subjects is about three.
How to get the most out of a free tier
Test the prompt, not the picture
Use free generations to find out whether a prompt structure works. Resolution and length do not matter for that, and both cost extra.
Generate at the lowest settings available
Shortest length, lowest resolution, cheapest model. You are checking composition and motion, and both are visible at 720p.
Change one thing per run
With nine seconds a day you cannot afford to change three things and then wonder which one worked.
Download everything immediately
Free outputs are often deleted after a few days, and on no account tools they are gone when you close the tab.
Keep a prompt file
The value you build on a free tier is a set of prompts that work. That transfers to a paid tool. The clips mostly do not.
When free stops being the right answer
There is a clean line. Free tiers are for finding out what works. As soon as you know what you want and you are generating to a deadline, the daily cap becomes the expensive part, because a project that could take an afternoon takes a fortnight instead.
The other line is consistency. A video made across five free tiers arrives at five resolutions and frame rates, from five models with five different looks, and normalising all of that costs more time than the generation did. One tool, one model, one look is worth paying for the moment you are making something rather than testing something.
Notes on individual plans
- Magic Hour. The only plan in the table that publishes both halves of the sum. Three runs a day at three seconds with audio, which is a genuinely useful testing budget and openly not a production one.
- Synthesia. Ten minutes a month sounds enormous next to everything else here, and it is avatar video. If you want a presenter it is the most generous free tier in this market. If you want footage it is not the same product.
- Adobe Firefly. Clean output, no watermark, and a daily credit allotment that the page does not put a number on. Good for occasional single shots inside an existing Adobe workflow.
- Pixlr. States no watermarks plainly, which is the single most useful thing a free video page can say, and runs a mix of well known models.
- Kapwing. Free but watermarked, so on the unit this page uses it scores zero clean seconds. Useful as an editor, counted honestly as a generator.
- GizAI and Vidnoz. Both usable before an account exists, which makes them the fastest way to see output at all. Neither publishes a monthly figure, so neither can be converted.
Questions about free plans
Which free AI video tool gives you the most video a month?
Of the tools that publish enough numbers to check, Magic Hour works out at about 270 seconds a month and Synthesia at 600 seconds, though Synthesia's minutes are avatar video rather than generated footage. Everyone else quotes credits without publishing the exchange rate.
Why is it so hard to compare free plans in this category?
Because the units are all different. One tool counts daily generations, another counts credits, another counts minutes of a different product entirely. Converting them to seconds of usable video a month is the only way to see them side by side.
Is free enough to make a real video?
For a finished video, no. Nine seconds a day covers testing a prompt and picking a model. A one minute edit needs ten to twenty usable clips, and usable clips come at a rate of one per three or four takes.
Do free tiers use worse models?
Often they restrict which models you can pick rather than degrading the model you get. The strong native audio models are usually paid only, and the silent image to video models are usually the free ones.
What is the catch on free with no watermark?
Usually length and count. A tool can afford to hand you clean output if it only hands you a few seconds of it. Watermarks and generosity trade off against each other, and a tool that has neither limit is running a trial rather than a free tier.
Should I use several free tiers at once?
It works and it is tedious. You end up with clips at different resolutions and frame rates that need normalising before they cut together. For a one off project it is fine, for anything repeated it costs more time than it saves.
